Physical Education Program

PE is an important aspect of life in St Brigids. The PE programme in St. Brigid’s GNS incorporates the six strands of the PE curriculum- Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games, Aquatics and Outdoor and Adventure.

A school P.E. plan has been devised to divide the six strands across three terms of the school year. The 15 Fundamental Movement skills have been incorporated across the six strands. We strive to provide a balanced, inclusive, progressive PE programme to all our students.

Aquatics and GAA are timetabled throughout the year as the school relies on expert coaching in these areas.

Over the last three years we have been reviewing and revising our PE programme through Self School Evaluation and we have focused our attention on improving the following strands: Outdoor and Adventure, Gymnastics and Dance. Through this process we also have reviewed the games and equipment used during break times as well as compiling a list of Playground Games to be taught to the children during the school year 2019-2020 to increase physical activity and enjoyment during break times.

TEAM ALPHA

The 23 girls on Team Alpha have been playing out of their skins during the group stages of our league. We have won 3 out of 3 games and remain undefeated going in to a quarter final! The girls have shown incredible team spirit, enthusiasm, dedication and commitment over the last number of weeks especially in our final group stage match against St. Mochta’s, Clonsilla on Wednesday 25th September. St. Mochta’s had also won their first 2 matches so it was all to play for. We led the game for the entire first half, going in at half time 2 points up. We got the first score of the second half and settled really well. St. Mochta’s came back though and with 5 minutes to go they scored a goal to lead by 1 point. Our girls we determined with the attack but sent 3 balls wide! With less than a minute to go our girls dug deep and banged in a goal to lead by 2. St. Mochta’s were not going to lie down easily though and they went on one more attack but it was no match for our super defenders and the full time whistle blew with a 2 point lead for our St. Brigid’s Girls!
A nail biting, heart stopping game. Well done to all the girls who put in a superb effort! Onwards and upwards to our Quarter Final – details to be confirmed!

TEAM CHARLIE

The 24 girls on Team Charlie have put in a huge effort as many of them played their first ever Ladies Football match! The team have played 2 matches over the last couple of weeks and while we have not been victorious we have learned a lot, gained some valuable experience and had lots of fun at the same time!

Well done to all the girls!

A huge thank you to all the parents who have been helping out with supervision over the last month. Without you we would not be able to have 2 football teams in St. Brigid’s.

Go raibh mile maith agaibh go léir.

Swimming

In 2018 we carried out a survey of parents/guardians, children and students in order to improve our swimming programme. Swimming lessons are offered to pupils from 3rd  to 5th  class. Other classes will learn from classroom aquatics lessons e.g. Hygiene, Water Safety, Entry to and Exit from water at pool or beach.  Much of this element of aquatics will be covered in integration with SPHE.

Active Week

We had a jam packed Active week, in June, which started with our sports days, Monday for the seniors and Tuesday for juniors. a mixture of races, Frisbee, dancing, mini Olympic sports and GAA games provided by Peter were enjoyed by the children. We were so lucky to have the 'skipping man' in for two days and all children had opportunity to learn some new skipping skills and some girls got to show us their skills in a demo on Tuesday evening.

Wednesday saw us all take to the oval for our Daily Mile, Thursday saw us test our strength in a tug of war challenge and Friday we were all enjoyed some ballroom and Latin dance in the hall. Thanks to Elaine O' Dwyer and Karen McNamara for coming in and showing us some dance and cheer leading moves.

Friday finished on a high with the Active Committee taking the lead and providing us with an Active Concert. A great opportunity to see the talents of girls in the school.

Looking forward to Active Week, June 2020!
